Ποιο ήταν το κίνητρο για να στραφείς στο Animation/Film/Motion Graphics/Video Making….
Η επαγγελματική μου εμπειρία στις γραφικές τέχνες. Συστήθηκα στον διευθυντή του MacroMedia από τον πρώην καθηγητή μου, Ken Heibert. Όλη η δουλειά στον τομέα τότε ήταν πολύ πειραματική. Αργότερα, άρχισα να ανακαλύπτω τις δυνατότης του motion graphics όταν καταλάθος βρήκα το «Moving Type» των Woolman και Bellantoni. Άρχισα να διδάσκω το Type in Motion το οποίο αργότερα εξελίχτηκε σε Motion Design, που συμπεριλάμβανε μια ποικιλία εφαρμογών όπως interface design, data visualisations και κινητικές αφηγήσεις.
Ποιος καλλιτέχνης σε εμπνέει;
Η έμπνευση μου προέρχεται από πολλές πηγές. Εκτιμώ πολύ την δουλειά και φιλοσοφική στάση του Guy Wolstenholme και Moving Brands. Ήταν πάρα πολύ ανοικτοί ως προς τις διαδικασίες τους, και είμαι πολύ ευγνώμων που τις μοιράστηκαν μαζί μου. Έχω μια πολύ καλή ομάδα συναδέλφων… καθηγητές που δουλεύουν μαζί μου, με τους οποίους συζητώ συχνά και ανταλλάζω ιδέες για εργασίες μαθητών. Επίσης εμπνεύστηκα από τον πρώην διευθυντή μου, Chris Myers που με βοήθησε και ενδυνάμωσε ούτως ώστε να προχωρήσω δυναμικά στο μονοπάτι του σκεπτικισμού.
Τι σε εμπνέει;
Απολαμβάνω να παρακολουθώ ποιοτική τηλεόραση και ταινίες. Για παράδειγμα, η δουλειά του Kyle Cooper. Τείνω να παρακολουθώ την φύση και την εκτέλεση… συγκεκριμένα, τον χορό. Προσπαθώ πάντοτε να τα συνδέσω με το motion design, την μουσική και την χορογραφία. Με εμπνέει, επίσης, και η περιέργεια των μαθητών μου που συνεχώς ανεβάζουν τον πήχη του τι είναι πιθανόν στο motion design.
Υπήρξες/Είσαι μέντορας εσύ;
Είχα την υπέροχη ευκαιρία να συνεργαστώ με αρκετούς πολύ καλούς μαθητές στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες, Γερμανία, Βραζιλία, Νικαράγουα, Σιγκαπούρη και Ταϊπέι. Έμαθα τόσο εγώ από αυτούς, όσο και αυτοί από εμένα. Ήταν μια πολύ ευχάριστη εμπειρία.

Σχεδιαστής, διδάσκων, ταξιδιώτης, ‘ενωτής’, ιστορικός και κάτοικος του κόσμου.
Ποιο Animation/Film/Motion Graphics/Video Making από κάποιον άλλον θεωρείς το καλύτερο μέχρι στιγμής;
Μια εργασία μαθητών για την οποία συμβούλεψα, από τους Avery Hsiao και Ueiting Huang για την ομορφιά των χταποδιών. Είναι σχεδόν αριστούργημα ως προς την μορφή, εκτέλεση, αφήγηση και εξυπνάδα του.
Σε ενδιαφέρουν άλλα πεδία τέχνης πέραν από τα προαναφερθέντα;
Στην ζωγραφική, χορό, θέατρο και μουσική. Έχουν όλα σχέση με το motion design.
Είσαι ενεργός σε άλλα πεδία τέχνης;
Μαθαίνω ατσάλινα drums.

What was the trigger to move to Animation / Film / Motion Graphics / Video making…
My formal background is in graphic design. In 1997, I was introduced to MacroMedia Director by my former professor, Ken Heibert. The work was very experimental in those days. I later began to discover the potential of motion graphics when I stumbled upon “Moving Type” by Woolman and Bellantoni. I started teaching Type in Motion which later expanded to Motion Design, encompassing a range of applications including interface design, data visualizations, and kinetic narratives.
Who inspires you…
My inspiration comes from multiple sources. I really appreciate the work and philosophical position of Guy Wolstenholme and Moving Brands. They have been extremely open about their process and I’m grateful for their willingness to share. I have a great group of peers… fellow teachers who I regularly converse with and exchange ideas on students projects. I’ve also been inspired and mentored by my former chair, Chris Myers, who has helped empowered me to forge ahead in the path of skepticism.
What inspires you…
I enjoy seeing great TV and Film tiles. It is hard not to find intrigue in the work of Kyle Cooper. I tend to observe nature and performance… particularly dance. I try to find parallels with motion design, music and choreography. I’m also inspired by the curiosity of my students who continuously raise the bar on what’s possible in the space of motion design.
Are you a mentor?
I have had the good fortune of working with many great students in the US, Germany, Brazil, Nicaragua, Singapore, and Taipei. I have learned as much from them as they have from me. It is an experience that has been extremely fulfilling.

Which (Animation / Film / Motion Graphics / Video making) (by someone else) do you consider the best to date
There is a student project that I advised by Avery Hsiao and Ueiting Huang on the Wonders of the Octopus. It is near masterful in its form, execution, narrative, and wit.
Are you interested in other forms of art?
Yes… painting, dance, theater, and music. They all have relevance to motion design.
Are you active in other forms of art?
I am learning to play the steel drum.
