Μαζί μας o Jon Krasner.

To I LOVE GRAPHIC,

Ποιο ήταν το κίνητρο για να στραφείς στο Animation/Film/Motion Graphics/Video Making….

Ποιος καλλιτέχνης σε εμπνέει;

Τι σε εμπνέει;

Είχες κάποιον μέντορα;

Υπήρξες/Είσαι μέντορας εσύ;

Σε ενδιαφέρουν άλλα πεδία τέχνης πέραν από τα προαναφερθέντα;

Είσαι ενεργός σε άλλα πεδία τέχνης;

Ποιο Animation/Film/Motion Graphics/Video Making έργο σου θεωρείς το καλύτερο μέχρι τώρα;

Ποιο Animation/Film/Motion Graphics/Video Making από κάποιον άλλον θεωρείς το καλύτερο μέχρι στιγμής;

Οι παλιότερες μελέτες του Hans Richter (π.χ. Rhythmus 21, Rhythmus 23) και η ταινία του ‘Ghosts Before Breakfast’, Len Lye: Kaleidoscope, Tusalava, Harry Smith: Film No. 3: Interwoven, Walter Ruttmann: Opus I; Fernand Leger, Ballet Mecanique.

What was the trigger to move to Animation / Film / Motion Graphics / Video making?

After studying painting and art history in graduate school, I decided to pursue a second M.F.A. in graphic design with a focus on animation. I quickly realized that the possibilities of motion allowed me to bring my artwork to a new level with the added dimensions of time and change. The elements of motion and transition offered me a new form of choreography that could create a realm where viewers can engage longer in the subject being portrayed. Further, I realized very quickly that animation allows me to integrate diverse media including video, animation, typography, and musical composition.

Who inspires you?

I am most inspired by people who embrace the process of experimentation. For example, Scottish bacteriologist Sir Alexander Fleming changed the course of medicine by discovering penicillin from an uncovered petri dish filled with Staphylococcus bacteria. The experimental activities of fine artists who pioneered animation in filmmaking during early 20th C. both inspire and help develop a greater appreciation of the legacy of motion design. Their work with kinetic abstraction exerted tremendous influence on succeeding generations of artists and motion designers.

What inspires you?

I am inspired by humankind’s quest for telling stories through moving images, dating back to cave paintings found in Lascaux, France and Altamira, Spain, as well as attempts to imply motion in early Egyptian wall decoration and Greek vessel painting.

I also find the beauty of the natural world most inspirational because it helps perpetuate ideas, feelings and memories. My ritual of incorporating natural materials into collage and assemblage gives me the freedom to engage in a purely physical process of documenting recapturing the spirit of the natural environment.

Did you have a mentor?

My parents have been my biggest supporters and mentors all of my life. They instilled upon me the value of hard work and determination, along with a constant curiosity about the world and thirst for knowledge.

Are you a mentor?

I am a mentor to my students by providing an environment that that nurtures the creative process and emphasizes personal, artistic development. My emphasis on experimentation with concepts, tools, and techniques allows students to derive inspiration, cultivate their ideas, articulate aesthetic concepts, and develop a more sophisticated visual vocabulary. I challenge students to take risks in order to move beyond the comfort zone.

Are you interested in other forms of art?

My artistic orientation is multi-disciplinary, influenced in part by graduate training that enabled me to hybridize the fields of painting, graphic design, animation, and musical composition. This dual background affords me the flexibility to experiment with and integrate media.

Are you active in other forms of art?

As a practicing artist, my mixed media collages, digital prints, and animations have been exhibited and screened at numerous galleries and academic institutions in the United States and abroad.

My ritual of incorporating natural materials into collage and assemblage permits me the freedom to engage in a physical process of documenting recapturing the spirit of the natural world. For example, a series of collages entitled “Venetian Relics” were derived from layers of weathered posters that were plastered to the city walls. The nature of the worn material provided a means of expressing the authenticity of Venice’s majestic color and light. During a residency at Dorland Mountain Arts Colony (Temecula, California) in 1993, I incorporated earth and vegetation into collage to express the beauty of the desert landscape of southern California.

My most recent collages and assemblages continue to explore the coexistence of natural and synthetic elements from the coast: for example, rubberized rescue gear and colored, fiberglass kayaks against the natural, windswept surfaces of the dunes and remarkable changing textures implanted in the shoreline. The processes of sawing, nailing, drilling, gluing, and painting in the studio offer a rewarding diversity from working digitally.

Which (Animation / Film / Motion Graphics / Video making) (by you) do you consider the best to date?

I find that the experimental animations for film that were produced during the early twentieth century are the most interesting because they were purely about form and motion. The ideas were spontaneous, and the artists that created them were in tune with the linguistics of movement and rhythm.

Which (Animation / Film / Motion Graphics / Video making) (by someone  else) do you consider the best to date?

Hans Richter’s early motion studies (i.e., Rhythmus 21, Rhythmus 23) and his Dada film Ghosts Before Breakfast; Len Lye, Kaleidoscope, Tusalava; Harry Smith, Film No. 3: Interwoven; Walter Ruttmann, Opus I; Fernand Leger, Ballet Mecanique.
